Paul Chapman's Hoof Care Clinic
New Zealand, March, 2002
By Sandra Kerridge
In this Article: A
general overview of the Paul Chapman clinics held
in New Zealand with before and after
pictures.
Well, our time with Paul is drawing to a
close and I have to say I am personally very
pleased with what I have learned .... My mare is
going to be eternally grateful as well.
Here's an overview of the horses Paul has seen
this weekend .. out of 26 horses, two had been
diagnosed with navicular from a vet and xrays,
destined to spend the rest of their days out in a
paddock.
Shortly after the clinic, the owner rang me
thrilled as these horses were hooning around the
paddock. This is the first time she has seen them
doing this for literally months.
Right after Paul had trimmed one hoof and the owner
the other these horses were trotting out on bituman
showing no signs of lameness but finding their new
feet.
Saved From the Knacker's Yard
There was another horse who was destined to being
destroyed and more good luck to the horse this had
been put back several times before she found out
about Pauls visit.
This horse was diagnosed by the vet following a
chipped leg bone to have arthritis and that this
horse would require to have 3 injections at cost of
$120 each and possibly a $2,500 surgery and follow
up injections every three months.
The horse was unrideable and lame had a bowed left
leg and drop left shoulder. The owner was able to
ride the horse immediately after the trimming, and
also able to do 3 laps on a gravel rd with an
extended trot with a skid stop. Needless to say
this horse will now not be destroyed ...
A Happier Kid's Pony
One major standout that i witnessed was a kids
pony. On the sat these kids were riding this lovely
pony and she was obviously in discomfort. This pony
didn't want to go forward, was bucking at every
opportunity and starting showing signs of lameness
after a few minutes work.
After the trim she was saddled and ridden with
floating paces and moving forward freely with no
signs of misbehaviour she carried herself with a
interested attitude and was really enjoying herself
.. needless to say the child was beaming ...
My Horse
And for myself, my horse Maggies foot is wayyy
soooooo much better. I had no idea how bad her foot
had been til I seen the pics from 7 weeks ago and
compared them to before we started trimming. Then
when we did trim how much her angles changed with
what appeared to me to be very little taken off her
heels.
Yes, for all the 26 horses Paul has helped this
weekend it was definately worth every cent. Just
one thing that I had to come to terms with was
learning that my mare had foundered twice (I was
indignant that she has never foundered but "the
proof is on the hoof").
And what I had to learn was new terminlogy that
what my definition of founder and navicular
diease/syndrome are ... its completely different to
what my understanding of it had been .. and
incurable is in fact curable and horses that had to
be destroyed because of incurable symptoms need
only minor adjustments to live a heathly life ....
as in Parelli the old adage comes to mind .. do the
complete opposite of what normal ppl ( farriers )
do ...
